I learned in Tombstone that the Civil War was fought as far west as Arizona. I have since looked for information about Arizona's African American history, but turned up very little. I imagine freed or escaped slaves might have been attracted to the wide-open West to escape from the racism in the East. I'll have to continue my search to find more history.
