This telescope was created by Dr. Trevor Weeks and was the prototype with 240 mirrors. Each can be adjusted as needed and are curved to focus on the center beam amplifier tube. Notice that there are no mirrors where the tube is as they would be blocked anyway. On the left bottom portion of the telescope there are some round mirrors while the rest are hexagons. The hexagone shape is favored as it captures more light, allows the mirrors to be spaced closer together and with fewer gaps than round mirrors. The pole on the right is a ligtning rod to protect the telescope. Weekes discovered the first ground-based detection of a gamma-ray source from the Crab Nebula in 1989.
